Rotary modules

A rotary module is a compact rotation unit that enables precise and controlled rotation of up to 360°. Inside, axial, radial and tilting forces are absorbed by a combined bearing and gear system. The integration of worm or spur gears in a closed housing creates a heavy-duty rotary mechanism that is used particularly in robotics, automation and energy technology.

High-quality CAMM rotary modules have ground gears in accordance with DIN 6-7 and precision-manufactured housings made of tempered cast iron (EN-GJS-400-15) or aluminum alloys (EN AC-46000). This ensures permanently backlash-free torque transmission with a low dead weight.

The CAMM Group's rotary modules are characterized by their high torque density, compact design and above-average service life. Thanks to optimized worm and spur gear mechanisms, torques of up to 60 kNm are reliably transmitted with axial forces of up to 4500 kN.

Depending on the version, the modules are self-locking, making the use of additional braking systems superfluous. The dust and moisture-proof housing (IP65) protects against external influences, while a precise FEM-based design guarantees maximum safety under continuous load.

Today, rotary modules are a central component of modern industrial and automation systems. They are installed in robotic systems, machine tools, solar tracking systems and crane systems, wherever precise and resilient rotary motion is required.

In energy technology, they enable the tracking of solar panels or wind components, while in construction and material handling they ensure controlled lifting and swiveling processes. CAMM rotary modules are also used in logistics, packaging and production technology to perform positioning tasks with maximum accuracy.

Depending on the application, worm gear, spur gear and double drive modules differ significantly in their behavior.

A worm gear rotary module operates quietly, offers built-in self-locking and is suitable for safety-relevant or static applications. The spur gear rotary module, on the other hand, allows higher speeds and impresses with an efficiency of up to 85 %, making it ideal for dynamic robotic axes and automated production systems.

Double-worm systems are used for extremely high holding forces, while hybrid rotary modules have integrated sensors or torque measurement to provide precise feedback to the control system.

The selection of the right rotary module always depends on the torque requirement, the axial and radial load, the desired transmission ratio and the construction environment. In high-performance applications, the module must be able to withstand temperature ranges from -20 °C to +60 °C just as reliably as high continuous loads over many operating cycles.

The choice of material - such as cast iron for robustness or aluminum for lightweight construction - and the degree of protection according to IP54 to IP65 are just as crucial, especially for outdoor applications. Careful FEM analysis ensures the optimum combination of rigidity, service life and weight. CAMM engineers help to adapt each module precisely to the load profile and system architecture of the machine.

Even though CAMM rotary modules are generally designed for low maintenance, regular inspections contribute significantly to extending their service life. The raceways and worm shafts are generally relubricated every 300 operating hours for indoor applications and at shorter intervals for outdoor use.

It is also important to check the fastening screws, seals and a functional check to detect vibrations or uneven running behavior. With correct maintenance, CAMM rotary modules can withstand over 20,000 hours of continuous operation without significant wear.
